Road to Revolution

  • French and Indian War

The French and Indian War was a war between the French and their Indian allies and the British. This war was blamed on the British by the colonists and the British blamed the colonists. The war was very expensive. There was now tension because the colonists didn't get the Ohio River Valley and that was why they fought.
  • Treaty of Paris

The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War. The colonists got the land east of the Mississippi River. The French got everything West of that. This was called the Proclamation Line. The colonist felt that their right to land was violated.
  • Quartering Act

The Quartering Act was a straight invasion of colonists' privacy. They had to house and feed British soldiers. The colonists were not okay with this. The Act was passed without representation. This caused people to taunt and resent the soldiers.
  • Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre was caused from the taunting. The taunting became rock and snowball throwing. The soldiers shot in an open crowd and killed 5 colonists. This was used as propaganda to recruit people to the rebellion. The soldiers were not found guilty because of John Adams.
  • Tea Act

The Tea Act was an act that granted the British East India Company tea a monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies. The colonists didn't like this because tea was something they drank on a daily and believe the British shouldn't be able to tax them. This lead to the Boston Tea Party.
  • Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party was caused by the Tea act. The Boston Tea Party was when a group called the "Sons of Liberty" dressed up as Native Americans. They dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This made the king pass Intolerable Acts.
  • Intolerable Acts

The Intolerable Acts were passed right after the Boston Tea Party. The intolerable Acts included the Boston Port Bill, the Second Quartering Act, the Quebec Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, and the Administration of Justice Act. These acts took away any right to self-government, allowed British soldiers to stay in their homes, and shut down ports in Boston. The biggest thing was not being able to self-government since many colonies had been doing this for a long time.
  • First Continental Congress

This was the First Government of all the colonies. They wanted to take in and try to help all needs and fight for their rights so they tried to boycott. They made a "committee of Correspondence" to enforce the boycott. This led to the second Continental Congress after the battle of Lexington and Concord.
  • Lexington and Concord

The British marched into Lexington and Concord intending to suppress the rebellion by seizing weapons of the colonists. This turned into a battle and caused a colonial revolt against the British policy and this was a fight for political Independence. The colonists successfully drove the British back to Boston.
  • Second Colonial Congress

The Second Continental Congress appointed generals to lead the army, one being George Washington. They also drafted the Olive Branch Petition that was sent to King George lll. They were hoping for a peaceful resolution. The king refused to hear the Petition which declared the American colonies in revolt.
