Proclamation of 1763
This was an act that forbid the settlers from settling past a line drawn along the Appalachan Mountains. This was a way for the British to organize the new North American empire and to try to stablize relations with the Native North Americans. The colonist were very angry with this because many of them already had homes and were living in that area. -
Sugar Act of 1764
The Sugar Act was was onw of the first challenges that the British gave the colonist. It was the raising of taxes on sugar, coffee, indigo, and wine. The British put this act into place because they wanted to gain more money and get the colonist to sell their goods to them instead of other countries. The British didn't ask the colonist's permission to do so, causing the colonist to become angry, they didn't like the British controlling them. -
Currency Act of 1764
This act was put into place to reduce the smuggling of molasses and sugar products, which were the most widely traded products during this time. The British did this as another way to reduce their dept. The colonist came together to protest that it was "taxation without representation" because it was violating their rights as British citizens. -
Stamp Act of 1765
The stamp act was where all public or legal documents are required to to have either a stamp or British seal that costs money. It was put into place to cover the costs of the war between Great Britian and France. The colonist became outraged and revolted against the British, taking their first step towards becoming a free country. -
Quartering Act of 1765
The colonist were forced to allow British forces to stay in their homes and be provided essentials for their daily life. This act was put into place in order to assert more authority over the colonies. The colonist became very upset with the British due to the fact that it was a violation of the colonist's Bill of Rights of 1689. -
Stamp Act Congress 1765
It was a meeting held in New York City. 27 representatives from nine of the thirteen colonies showed up. They were eager to show their displeasure towards the British after they past the Stamp Act. At the meeting congress wrote up Declaration of Rights, petition the king and Parliament. -
Delcaratory Act
This act was when the British revoked the Stamp Act and used the declaration to justify their revoke. They did so because the boycotts the colonist were performing were hurting the British trade. The colonist became outraged, they thought that it hinted at more act to be made. -
Townshend Act of 1767
This act was a string of laws that were passed in 1767 by the Parliament of Great Britian. The British did so to raise of income in the colonies in order to pay the salaries og governors and judges, create a more effective means of enforcing compliance with trade, the punish New York for not going along with the Quartering Act, and to show the colonnist that the British Parliment had the right to tax them. When this happened the colonist had an uproar, but not as quickly as the Stamp Act did.
