The French and Indian war
This 7 year war started over a land dispute for trading in Ohio. The French, colonists, and Native American allies all fought in this war against the British. -
The proclamation of 1763
This was a British produced land boundary that stopped Anglo-American colonists from settling land than was won by the French during the French and Indian war. -
The sugar act
This act cut and limited the amount of foreign sugar that could be traded. It was very significant because it marked the first time parliament put a tax on the colonies for the purpose of generating more revenue. -
The Stamp Act
This act required the colonists to pay a tax, in the form of a stamp, on various forms of papers, documents, and playing cards. This was to help pay for the British troops stationed in the colonies during the former 7 yr war. -
The Townshend Act
This consisted of a series of measures basically taxing all the goods imported into the colonies. The colonists started seeing that they had no representation and that these acts were an abuse of power. -
The Boston Massacare
This was a street fight that broke out between a "patriot mob" and British soldiers, rocks, snowballs, and sticks were thrown at each other. This quickly escalated and soon several colonists were killed. -
The Tea Act
This act was a law that basically gave all control of trade and delivery to the Eat Indian Tea company. Since the parliament was still looking for more more money they added an extra tax of money on tea charged on each sale then handed to the government. -
The Boston Tea Party
This was a political protest orchestrated by the American colonists who were angry at the British for the lack of representation in the tax laws. So they dumped 342 chest of tea into the harbor and made their point. -
The Intoleratable Acts
These were a series of laws put in place following the Boston tea party to punish the colonists of Massachusetts basically. It pretty much just closed Boston port to commercial traffic and forbade any exports to foreign provinces. -
The 1st Constitutional Congress
During this delegates from 12 of the colonies met to discuss America's future and whether it should be under British rule. It was important because they also eventually started coordinating how the patriot colonies are going to stand against Britain's harsh policies.
