Road to Revolution: 1760-1776

  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    France and Britain constantly fought over the Ohio River Valley. So the French built Fort Duquesne, this helped them heavily. Indians allied with France and France declares war. The French abandoned Fort Duquesne and the British took it and called it Fort Pitt. France loses its last troops in Canada, Spain allies with France. The Treaty of Paris ends the war giving Britain Florida and Canada from Spain and France.
  • Stamp Acts

    Stamp Acts
    The colonists were forced to pay taxes, by the British government, for troops fighting in the Seven Years War. These taxes would be enforced by a stamp on many legal documents.
  • The Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts
    The British government wanted more money from the colonists so they passed the Townshend Acts. The Townshend Acts were a set of taxes set from British goods like glassware and tea. The caused the colonists to boycott British goods.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was when British soldiers shot and killed multiple colonists. These colonists were in a mob outside, just on the street.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party was a protest by the Sons of Liberty; in which they dressed as Native Americans and threw tea off of a British ship. This was a protest against the Townshend Acts.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    After the Boston Tea Party 4 laws were put into place called the Coercive Acts but soon called the Intolerable Acts by the people for being so cruel. So basically most important building would be closed for the colonists and the British soldiers couldn’t be punished unless sent back to England.
  • “Give me liberty or give me death”

    “Give me liberty or give me death”
    Patrick Henry gave a very motivational speech at the second Virginia convention. In the speech he says the words, “Give me Liberty, or give me death.” He eventually became the governor but this speech motivated the colonist to win their freedom from England.
  • The Battle of Lexington and Concord

    The Battle of Lexington and Concord
    Lexington and Concord was the first military engagement of the revolution. It is where the famous “shot heard from around the world” comes from. This victory for the American people chased more colonists to fight for freedom from England.
  • The Battle of Bunkerhill

    The Battle of Bunkerhill
    The Battle of Bunkerhill happened during the Siege of Boston. The British won but it was a very close battle. Though the Americans technically lost this showed them they could hold their own again what they thought was a much more superior army. This also shed light on the fact that the colonists wouldn’t reconcile with England.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    The Declaration was the final step to independence for America, this was the end to the American Revolution. America was finally its own country and free from England. The Americans created a new government naming George Washington their first president.
