Religious Requirements for voting
Voting was strict, and only men who had a certain amount of property could vote, as well as be devoted to the specific church. At first, you had to be called a Visible Saint, who were sinful people converted by heaven, but eventually you were able to vote if you were an adult male that had land and you were devoted to the church/ a member of the church. -
Pilgrims
The Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts, settling in Plymouth colony that they create. They left England for religious freedom, and are tolerant of others beliefs. They were very generous and friendly with the Natives, and that is where the first Thanksgiving occurred. -
Puritans
The Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were very strict, and came to the New World for religious freedom, thinking that they could purify the Church of England. The were not tolerant of any other beliefs than theirs, and there were consequences if you didn't believe in the church or what the Puritans beliefs were. -
Maryland- Catholics
Lord Baltimore bought land in hopes for religious freedom for Catholics. They were the minority and were severely persecuted. This would be refuge for them, and the Catholics were extremely tolerant of other religions, so anyone was allowed in the colony. Lots of Catholics(gentlemen) and Protestants(artisans and workers) moved there, and over time, the Catholics eventually began to become the minority again. -
Dissent in Massachusetts Bay Colony
Massachusetts Bay Colony was very strict, and two famous people were banned from there because the Puritans didn't agree with what they said. Anne Hutchinson was a deeply religious woman. She thought that the enforcement went against the doctrine, which was the god chose every event to happen for a reason, and was exiled for heresy, while Roger Williams was banned because he believed in separation of Church and state. Roger Williams later went on to found Rhode Island. -
Quakers
King Charles II owed William Penn’s father land, so he gave William some in America. Penn founded Pennsylvania where Quakers resided, there was no violence, pacifists, and believed in many of the modern day beliefs today, such as equality for women. -

The First Great Awakening
The First Great Awakening was a time when many religious piety were revitalized and brought back in the American colonies, and reforming the church into the Methodist church The thought that God has all the power and the fates of sinful men and women are left and the hands of god was brought back as well. -
Virginia Statutes for Religious Freedom
Each colony had an established church. In New England, it was the Congregational Church, while in the South, it was the Church of England. Only Rhode Island and Pennsylvania didn't have an established church. This allowed for the prevention between state and church. This meant that the church could not have a role in the government or political and other way around, and the idea was the same one the Roger Williams had. This made it mandatory for all colonies to have state and Church separate.
