The Missouri Compromise was kept the number of slave and free states equal.This lead up to tension between the North and South because Missouri wanted to be part of the United States but they did not want to unbalance the equal amounts of free and slave states. -

A lady Named Harriet Sowe wrote a novel called Uncle Tom's Cabin which would show the evils of slavery.In the North people loved this book and agreed with it but the South said it is nothing like slavery and did not like it. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
They wanted to divide the Nebraska Territory into two terriotries which would be Kansas and Nebraska. The North was upset and the South was in support of this because they had already outlawed slavery in these areas. -
Bleeding Kansas
When a gang attacked John Brown and he decided to strike back and he would also help Kansas become a Free state on his way there.The North and South argued that John Brown had killed 5 white men because of slavery and the white men go upset with this. -
Dread Scott Decision
There was an enslaved man named Dread Scott that moved to free states which then they had a court case in the Supreme Cout to decided weather or not he would be free because he crossed onto free land.The South rejoiced at the case and though it was legal in all teritories, White Northerner were shocked because people though this was an unfiar choice made by the judges. -

A town in Virginia named Harper Farry was raided by John Brown. They raided this town for its arsenal and to start a revolt. The people in the North and South though it was a slave Revolt by giving the slaves weapons from the Arsenal -
Election of 1860
Northern Democrats choose Stephen Douglas for president and Southerners picked John Breckridg. Many Americans tried to heal the North and South by forming new parties.This brought a strong reaction in the South because they though that they would no longer have a word in the National Government.
