  • Missouri compromise

    Congress came to a compromise of making Missouri be a slave state while Maine as a free state during 1820. Also known as the compromise of 1820
    1.) President James Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise into enforcement.

  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    The event that Mr. Turner led slaves to rebel against slave owners in Southampton county, Virginia to overthrow slave owners in 1831.
    1.) Was used to justify the reasoning of increasing slavery in the south

  • Annexation of Texas

    The passing of the independence of Texas leading to Texas being added onto the union of the U.S. Making it become a newly added state of the U.S Specifically, a slave state.
    1.) James Polk signed the passing of Texas becoming the next U.S state.

  • Mexican-American War

    Mexico believed they should protect what's theirs. Lead to the U.S fighting over right of Texas, since they believed in the manifest destiny that its their God given right to expand west.
    1.) The U.S originally planned to buy Texas from Mexico, but Mexico believed they owned the property of Texas,

  • Compromise of 1850

    A compromise that came to the agreement of making California as a free state. Let the citizens of New Mexico and Utah to decide wether they support slavery. And ending of the slave trade in D.C
    1.) Compromise of 1850 overturned the Missouri compromise.

  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Forced citizens to comply with the law of retrieving runaway and lost slaves. Even enforced in northern states in 1850.
    1.) Meant to prevent chance of southern secession

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    A bestselling book in Europe and sold very well in the states. Focused on the family suffering and overall pain slaves experience throughout their journey. Specifically in a kentucky plantation in 1852.
    1.) Changed attitudes on African Americans to favor them

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Allowed the citizens of Kansas to have popular sovereignty of choosing whether to side with slavery or not in 1854.
    1.) Led to great separation of anti and pro slavery in Kansas. Nobody was in the middle of the opinion anymore.

  • "Bleeding Kansas"

    Many skirmishes that lasted from 1854 to 1861. Started over political debates of the support and against the support of slavery in Kansas.
    1.) Led to the Republican party becoming established.

  • Brooks Attacks Sumner

    The day in Kansas where Mr. Brooks the Representative used a walking cane to attack Senator Mr. Sumner who was an abolitionist.
    1.) Mr. Sumner gave a speech speaking about going against slavery two days before the incident.

  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Timeline of many debates (seven debates in total) in 1858 where it mostly focused on the political issue of slavery. Increased the attention onto slavery.
    1.) Was really staged to make the two men race against one another for a seat in Senate.

  • Raid on Harpers Ferry

    The abolitionist John Brown led a small group of armed slaves in 1859 to take over a federal army in Harper's Ferry. At the end the revolt failed.
    1.) John Brown was convicted of treason and later hanged.

  • Election of 1860

    The 19th presidential election. The Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John Breckenridge. Felt to be a game changer in the stance of slavery on the political and governmental level.
    1.) At Abraham's victory, 7 southern states left the union as a result.
