  • Fugitive Slave Act

    This act made slaves return to their owners, even if they are in a free state. This is just one of many events to the road of the Civil War because of arguments that may rise from this act.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Created the territories of Nebraska and Kansas, bringing uprising violence for the fact which of those territories should allow slavery and which one shouldn’t.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Constant guerrilla warfare between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces in Kansas. It emerged from debates about whether slavery is legal or not.
  • Preston Brooks vs Charles Sumner

    A debate in congress over the violence after the Kansas-Nebraska act was formed. Ended when Brooks beat Sumner with a crane, taking Sumner 2 years to recover before returning to congress.
  • Dred Scott vs Standford

    An enslaved man, Dred Scott, and his wife, sued the St. Louis court because their freedom was taken away. Since slaves weren’t considered citizens, they had no protection, and lost the case, plus they returned to a slave state.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    A series of 7 debates occurred between Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen Douglas. They both debated about slavery and the rights of African Americans, both of their arguments being structured the same throughout all the debates.
  • John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry

    An abolitionist, John Brown, led an armed raid on an arsenal in Virginia in hope to end slavery. In the end, the raid failed, and Brown was executed a month after his trial.
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Winning both the electoral and popular vote, Abraham Lincoln wins the election for president, and is the first republican to be president. The result of the election resulted in southern states beginning to break away from the Union, and eventually, lead to the civil war a year later.
