  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Congress proposed a solution that would satisfy both the North and South. This meant that they admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
    1. At the same time, Congress established a boundary to separate free and slave areas.
    2. In 1819, James Tallmadge proposed a plan to end slavery in that area but it was shut down.
    Answer to Question: This act actually defused tensions between the South and the North because it balanced the amount of free and slave states.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    Nat Turner Rebellion
    Nat Turner led a slave rebellion in Southampton, Virginia that ended with the deaths of about 55 people; with a majority of them being white.
    1. The Second Great Awakening was actually a major influence to Nat Turner when he decided to revolt.
    2. After the event, many people became suspicious of more revolts happening and they started to question slaves.
    Answers to Question: The North and South started blaming each other for the revolt.

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise was a collection of 5 legislative acts that would help end the political feud over what states should be free or slave.
    1. Washington D.C. banned slave trade.
    2. California became a free state.
    Answer to Question: The South got the Fugitive Slave Act while the North admitted California as a free state.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This act forced slaves that were living in the North or South to either return back to their slave owners or be captured by force.
    1.The act also made the federal government responsible for finding, returning, and trying escaped slaves.
    2. It was part of the Compromise of 1850. Question: This created tension because the north would hide slaves we the south wanted them back.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    This book was a best-seller at it's time and was widely known for many accurate depictions of slavery which would go on to influence many abolitionist movements.
    1.The novel sold 300,000 copies within three months.
    2.So widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe in 1862.
    Question:This was a widely known book that may have shifted some southerners point of view on slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    This act allowed the current citizens of both states to decide on whether they would allow slavery or ban it in their territories.
    1. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north
    2.After the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed, pro-slavery and anti-slavery supporters rushed in to settle Kansas
    Question:The north and the south wanted to affect the outcome of the first election held there after the law went into effect.
  • Brooks Attacks Sumner

    Preston Brooks attacks Charles Sumner with a cane for giving a speech that harshly called out slaveholders.
    1. An abolitionist, in retaliation for a speech given by Sumner two days earlier in which he fiercely.
    2.Sumner himself regarded the speech as the "most thorough philippic ever uttered in a legislative body."
    Question: This created conflict between the slaveholders and the abolitionist.
  • Abraham Lincoln is Nominated President

    Abraham Lincoln is Nominated President, Lincoln's election for President was followed by South Carolina's succession from the Union. Its senators had resigned from Congress and several of the Southern states were looking to leaving it as well.
    1)Lincoln argued against the spread of slavery.
    2)while Douglas maintained that each territory should have the right to decide whether it would become free or slave.
    Question:The south was considered that Lincoln was going to try and end slavery

    This was a debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas over issues America was facing at the time. This was to see who would be senate.
    1.the debates had the format of each candidate being able to speak for 90 minutes.
    2.Debating the issue of the survival of the union and the institution of slavery
    Question:This is where politics can make there argument and attack others with their words.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    There was a violent altercation in Kansas between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers over whether Kansas should become a slave state or free state.
    1. Bleeding Kansas was finally ended by Lee's surrender.
    2. Settlers would actually move to Kansas to help set the decision to their favor.
    Question: The confrontations angered the North and the South and has further increased tensions.
  • Raid on Harper's Ferry

    This was a revolt led by John Brown to overtake the United States arsenal at Harper's Ferry.
    1.Known for the murder of slaveholders in "Bleeding Kansas."
    2.John Brown determined that he would free the slaves in Virginia by instigating a revolt.
    Question:This created violence between the slaveholders in the south and the abolitionist in the north, trying to start a revolt.
  • Election of 1860

    United States presidential election of 1860, American presidential election held on Nov. 6, 1860, in which Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckenridge,
    1)The Republican Party, which fielded its first candidate in 1856, was opposed to the expansion of slavery.
    2)Southerners feared that his election would lead to its demise, and vowed to leave the Union if he was elected.
    Question:The south thought they might lose slavery based on the candidates views.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was an important battle in the war, with Lee's invasion of a northern state. Some 23,000 Union soldiers and over 20,000 Confederate soldiers were killed by the end of the third day.
    1)Ten roads led into Gettysburg, which is a main reason that the battle was fought there
    2) The Confederates were confident they would win the battle
    This was the fight between the north and the south.
