    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which provided new territory south of line to become slave territory

    There was a big debate on whether California would be a Slave State or Free State because it would upset the balance
  • Compromise of 1850

    California was admitted as a free state. In exchange, the south was guaranteed that there would be no restrictions on slavery in Utah or New Mexico. The slave trade in DC was prohibited. Fugitive Slave Law was passed, requiring northerners to return runaway slaves to their owners and made everyone a sheriff.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    It was an anti-slavery novel which revealed the true horrors and evils of slavery to the North. The South claimed it was an unfair depiction of slavery; however, that did not stop the growing number of abolitionists in the North.

    Made it into 2 territories which would be voted on by pop soverngnity led to bleeding kansas where there was a mini battle

    Mini civil war in Kansas between proslave and antislave

    It declared their new party against the expansion of slavery into new territories and selected a lot of candidates.

    Slaves were property, and it made northerners mad because slavery could be everywhere
  • Hanging of John Brown

    it caused a rift between slave and free states. Free states thought we was a martyr while slave states were scared of him being a terrorist

    The confederate had taken all over lots of federal property in the south.Lincoln tried to send food to fort sumter. However, confederate guns soon opened fire on the Fort marking the start of a 4 year war.
