Lincoln's inauguration
With the swearing of his official vows, Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States. His first address was very important due to the fact that he was becoming president in a time of crisis. His speech was breathtaking, stating promises that seemed to appeal to the country. He dealt with the crisis as best as anyone could. -
Attack of Fort Sumter
The confederates demanded the surrender of the Union’s control over Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The commander for the Union refused, which began the open fire. Eventually, General Anderson of the Union surrendered and retreated the next day. A Confederate victory was the result. -
The Problem
Noah plans to leave his home in Grand Tower and go to war for the North, leaving his family behind. -
Rising Action (#1)
Cass, the youngest of the Pruitt children, uses her mind to see a wedding where everyone dies in terror. She also sees fighting of the civil war. -
Rising Action (#2)
The family is at a dance party when someone realizes that a boat from New Orleans is being docked in Grand Tower. -
Rising Action (#3)
Two Women, named Delphine Duval and Calinda, dock into Grand Tower and Momma (Mrs. Pruitt) offers their home for the visitors to stay. -
Rising Action (#4)
While shopping in town with Tilly, Delphine buys oil and matches, which no one but doctors buy in the town. -
Rising Action (#7)
Curry Marshall leaves Tilly a note telling her that he is going off to war for the South. He leaves her all his prize possessions along with the letter. -
Rising Action (#6)
Cass and Calinda become very close and have a connection that no one else shares or comprehends. -
Rising Action (#8)
Women from the town come to the Pruitt household and tell Mrs. Pruitt that Delphine could possibly be a spy and it is inappropriate to be giving her a place to stay in Grand Tower. -
Rising Action (#5)
Many people in town are unsure about Delphine and many rumors are spread about her around Grand Tower. -
Rising Action (#9)
Noah came home angry one day and reluctantly told the family how people at the forge were gossiping about how the family is spying for the south and thats why they are giving Delphine a place to stay. -
Rising Action (#10)
The family goes to a showboat, where there is a grand performance and Noah asks Delphine to dance, which indicates that they fancy each other. -
Rising Action (#11)
Calinda is pulled up on stage by the announcer, who recognizes her, and she starts dancing, which she is amazing at. She has an emotional moment on stage while dancing. -
Climax
Before anyone could try to stop him or even say goodbye, Noah packed up his things and left to fight for war. This devastated the family, especially Momma. -
Rising Action (#12)
Delphine reveals that Calinda’s real name is CoinCoin and she was nicknamed after the dance that she is somewhat famous for. She also reveals that they are actually sisters. -
The Battle of Bull Run
This was the first real major conflict in the Civil War. The Union Army, with 28,000 men and the Confederates, with 33,000 men fought under in Manassas, a southern base. The Confederates held out with the Union until they received reinforcements, which sent the Union retreating to Washington. This left the South with a sense of victory and the North with a feeling of revenge. -
Falling Action (#1)
Momma sends Tilly to get Noah, because she cannot live without Noah, but she could live without Tilly. -
Falling Action (#2)
Tilly and Delphine travel to Cairo and find Noah in bad conditions, near death. They stay and nurse him and the other injured soldiers back to health. During this time, Delphine tells Tilly about her true past and how difficult it has been to live her life. -
Battle of Belmont
General Grant received information about the Confederates position and lead the Union to the shore of the Mississippi River. They began marching until the first engagement occurred, and the Union destroyed the Rebel’s supplies and then withdrew once they knew that the Confederates had backup. This was a victory for the Union, which gave them a sense of strength. -
Falling Action (#3)
Once Noah is healed, he is ready to fight and returns to war. They find him later with Dr. Hutchings and he has lost his arm in battle. -
Falling Action (#4)
They take Noah home to find that Momma has drowned herself in the river and a coffin containing their Paw, who left when they were young. There is a moment of mourn in the Pruitt household. -
Resolution
The story ends with Tilly telling the story to her grandson, Howard, who later finds out that Delphine and Noah are his true grandparents and that their family was an interesting group affected by the civil war.
