Formation of the Taliban
The Taliban was formed. Taliban comes from the Muslim word "Talib" which means "student". The Taliban is a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist political movement and group. The founders of the Taliban were Mohammed Omar and Abdul Ghani Baradar. The Taliban was formed as a resistance movement to get rid of Soviet troops in Afghanistan. -
Execution of the Afghanistan President
The Taliban publicly executes Najibullah, the president of Afghanistan. He was beaten and tortured with his brother before he was killed. The Taliban then hung the bodies up where they were left for several days before they were allowed to be given a funeral. -
Buddhist Statues
The Taliban destroyed Buddhist statues. They said the statues were offensive to Muslims. They destroyed the statues despite international protest. -
9/11
Planes crash into the two World Trade Center Towers,the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field. The U.S. believed that bin Laden was the prime suspect. The United States was in a panic and wanted to find bin Laden. -
Bombing of the Taliban
The United States ordered the Taliban to turn over bin Laden. The Taliban refused and the United States and Britain bombed Taliban bases and targets. The Taliban said they were ready for jihad, or holy war. -
Taliban Surrenders in Afghanistan
The Taliban abandons their final stronghold. Then two days later, they surrendered their final Afghan territory. Later the press declared "the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan has totally ended." -
NATO
NATO takes over the security in Kabul. This is the first-ever commitment from the group outside of Europe. NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. -
Taliban Fights Against NATO
NATO expanded its peacekeeping operation. The Taliban launched a bunch of suicide attacks. They also launched raids against international troops. -
Death of the Taliban Commander
NATO announces that the Taliban leader, Mullah Dadullah was killed. The Afghan government backed up NATO. He was said to be killed during a U.S.-led operation. -
Osama bin Laden
The United States takes over a compound in Pakistan. They then killed Osama bin Laden. This ended the worry of another 9/11 orchestrated by bin Laden. -
