  • July 14th Revolution

    King Faisal II is overthrown by a military coup d'etat led by Abdul Salam Arif. King Faisal II and royal family are killed and Iraq is declared a Republic- General Quasim is made President
  • Causes of the Revolution

    Political: Rise of Anti Imperialist movements in the Middle East with Egypt's Gamal Nasser being a major opponent to Imperialist rule Economic: Iraq was in a depression. Inflation was out of control and quality of life was dropping fast.
  • President Quasim's Assassination Attempt

    One of the plotters to assassinate President Qasim was Saddam Hussein.
    President Qasim was ambushed whilst in his car and the gunmen shot the front and back of his car and then fled.
    However President Qasim survived
    Some of plotters were caught and sentenced to death.
    Saddam Hussein fled to Syria and then Egypt where he lived until 1963

    In 1963 the Ba’ath Party organised another revolution
    President Qasim was killed and the Ba’ath Party took control of government with Abdul Salam Arif as President.

    President Arif has Ba’ath Party members arrested including Saddam.

    Escapes prison and made of the RCC (military wing of the Ba'ath party)

    Saddam Hussein is named as his deputy but however he became largely responsible for the running if Iraq.

    Saddam Hussein beceoms more and more the face of the party.
  • Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr Steps Down from Presidency

    Saddam Hussein becomes the president of Iraq as well as the head of the armed forces.
