Napoleon Bonaparte began his rise to power on September 21 by saving the Directory. Napoleon expanded his empire by winning wars with diverse alliances of Europe nations.

    After the establishment of the French Republic, King Louis XVI was tried for his crimes. On January 21, the king was axed to death. On October 16th, nine months later, Marie Antoinette suffered the same fate. With Louis' execution, the French revolutionaries had passed the point of no return, which had a significant impact on the development of European history.
