-Christians believe that Jesus died on the cross to save them from there sins then 3 days later he rose from the dead. -

Paul of Tarsus
-Paul of Tarsus was one of the leaders of the first generation of Christians.
-He was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity.
-Paul was originally named saul.
-Paul of Tarsus taught the gospel of Christ to the first century of the world.
-Paul was born in Tarsus and was raised as a jew.
- Paul died at age 62 and he died in the year of 63 CE -

Great Fire of Rome
-The night of July 19, 64 A.D. a fire started among the shops by the Circus Maximus, one of Rome's stadiums.
-Many people thought that Nero created this disaster so that he could rebuild Rome to his liking.
-The flames of the fire where out of control for 6 days. When the smoke was cleared, 10 of Rome's 14 districts were ruined. 2/3 of Rome had been destroyed.
-Romans lived in wooden buildings which helped the fire to continue for days.
-Empire Nero was gone the night the fire started. -

Perpetua
-Perpetua was a christian women in the African city of Carthage.
-Perpetua's father tried to turn her away from her faith.
-Perpetua died on March 7 203. She died at the age of 22
-Perpetua and four others were arrested. she was arrested because she was a Christian. During this time Christians were very disliked.
-Perpetua was a very strong christian she held As a Christian, she felt that offering sacrifice was the same as denying that Jesus was the one and only Lord. -

Constantine the Great
-Constantine was a Roman emperor who ruled in the 4th century. He was the first christian emperor.
-Constantine + Licinius established the Edict of Milan, which made Christianity an officially religion in the Roman Empire.
- Constantine decided to give the east its own capital called The Greek city of Byzantium.
-Constantine was the 2nd longest serving Roman Emperor
-The Arch of Constantine is the largest surviving Roman triumphal arch and the last great monument of ancient Rome. -

Great Persecution of 303 CE
-In this time it interfered with the Christians legal rights.
- Many Christians were killed, as many as 3,000-3,500 Christians were executed.
-Diocletian ordered Christian buildings + the homes of Christians to be torn down, + he burned all of their books that were collected.
-The Great Persecution officially ended in April of 311.
-After 305, the year when Diocletian +Maximilian failed + Constantine became Augustus, there were no more active persecutions. -

Battle of Milvian Bridge
-The morning of October 28, a battle between the future Roman emperor Constantine + Maxentius took place.
-The battle was fought at Milvian Bridge of the River Tiber, not far from Rome.
-since Constantine took the victory in this battle he became the sole ruler of the empire.
-The night before the battle Constantine was said to have a vision which told him fight under the protection of the Christian God.
-This battle is often considered one of the most significant clashes in Roman history. -

Edict of Milan
-The Edict of Milan was a letter signed by the Roman emperors Constantine and Licinius,
-It created religious toleration in the Roman empire + stopped the persecution of Christians.
- Edict of Milan was the transition to the era of the Christian empire.
-Constantine's acceptance of Christianity paved the way for its fast spread throughout the Roman empire.
-After Constantine issued the edict,Christians no longer had to worry about this + could follow their own beliefs without fear. -

Emperor Theodosius
-Theodosius was born in Spain and became co-emperor with Gratianus in 378.
-He became empire because of his military abilities.
-He was sometimes called "the Great" because of his of the Gothic problem + because of his victory of orthodoxy, which earned for him the praise of Catholic writers.
-He was the last empire to rule over both eastern + western parts of the Roman empire.
-He issued the Edict of Thessalonica, which made Christianity, the official religion of the Roman Empire.
