Roman Rule of Israel
-The Kingdom of Judea used to be allied with the Roman Republic in the 2nd century BCE
-in 64 BCE they needed help and came to Rome for support, still wanting to practice their religion
-when Rome went from a republic to an empire, Judea became completely a part of Rome
-suddenly, they started to be forced to practice Roman traditions
-started Jewish-Roman Wars -

Jesus of Nazareth
-Jesus and his mother Mary were Jewish
-was called Jesus of Nazareth because he grew up there
-everybody in the town appreciated his kind gestures
-died on the cross in Jerusalem for the people that loved and supported him
-Rose from the dead on the third day after his crussufixion -

-was originally Jewish but converted to Christianity
-saw a vision of Jesus
-founded many churches in Asia Minor and Europe
-wrote a big portion of the Testament, having some of the oldest surviving literature

-was caused by emperor Nero
-he blamed it on the on the Christians
-this started the first persecutions of the Christians
-Nero started the fire because he wanted to rebuild Rome
-he threatened people that started to put out the fire -

-Perpetua was a 22 year old woman who was thrown to the beasts for being Christian
-lived in Carthage, Northern Africa
-she somehow survived the beasts, so she had to be executed
-many say she assisted in her execution to make things easier
-she spread the faith in Christianity because she died for it -

-The Great Persecution was also called The Diocletianic Persecution
-the final but most brutal persecution
-the Emperors Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius, and Constantius were involved
-they wanted Christians to follow traditional religion
- the persecution gave more attention and spread Christianity because people were dying for their beliefs -

-Roman emperor who was very well respected
-first Roman emperor to accept Christianity
-saw a vision of Jesus when heading to the Battle of Milvian Bridge that told him to use Christianity
-painted crosses on shields before battle
-they won the battle and he gave credit to Christianity

Battle of Milvian Bridge
-the battle was between emperor Constantine and Maxentius
-battle was won by Constantine
-caused him to appreciate Christianity
-all of Maxentius' men drowned before battle
-some say that Maxentius cut the bridge causing it to fall -

-removed all restrictions on worshiping Christianity/other religions allowing them to believe whatever they wanted
-allowed the establishment of churches

Emperor Theodosius
-was emperor from 379 CE to 395 CE
-first emperor to rule both the west and east sides of Rome
-made Christianity the state religion in Rome
-was given the title "the Great" because of his devotion to Christianity
-he received criticism because he wanted to ban polytheism, but that went against the Christian belief of "love one's neigbor"
