  • British Government passes Stamp Act

    The British government passed the Stamp Act which was a tax on goods in America to help cover the cost of defending, protecting, and securing the American colonies. Patrick Henry led protests saying his rights were violated and the colonists' requests were ignored. Since they were ignored they felt they were in their rights to overthrow the government and create a revolution.
  • Great Britain conquers and controls India

    European powers exploited conflicts by using their technological superiority and conquer and control with few men. They divided the people of India by their religious differences. The Hindus and Muslims would not unite due to their religious differences.
  • Sioux Ghost Dancers try religious mysticism

    Some of the more people tried to resist through religious mysticism. They thought their religious beliefs would protect them from the physical battle and forces of their enemies. In the American Midwest the Sioux Ghost Dancers tried this but these types of resistance typically were a big failure.
  • British seize Sudan

    In 1898 the British decided to seize a large region of Sudan from the state of Mahdiyya. In the decisive battle, the Mahdiyya army lost 11,000 soldiers; the British army lost 40.
  • Fillipinos declare independence

    Indigenous people often used some form of military resistance. One of the longest and bloodiest battles took place in the Philippines. It lasted two years with as many as 200,000 civilians dying from famine and disease.
  • Tilak calls for boycott of goods made in Britain

    Tilak and Gandhi, India's most famous members of their Congress, sent the message that military force shouldn't be used. Instead, they boycotted goods made in Britain to hurt them economically.
