Period: to
French and Indian War
France and Great Britain were fighting in North America for control of the Ohio River Valley. The war lasted 9 years and was incredibly expensive. Great Britain started to tax the colonists heavily to pay off the debt. This led to the first major disagreement between the colonists and the crown. -
Stamp Act
On this day, the British Parliament approved of the Stamp Act. Doing this would mean that colonists would have to pay taxes for every single printed paper they use. These papers included documents, playing cards, etc. All of these taxes were to help pay off the aftermath of the British war with France which had lasted for 7 years. -
Quartering Act
When this act was approved by the British Parliament it forced colonists to home and shelter passing British soldiers who were participating in the war. Not only shelter but to feed them and provide them with other supplements they wanted such as fuel and transportation. This angered the people because not only were they being taxed but now they had to give other of their valuable resources to thousands of troops. -
Townshend Acts
The British Parliament had once again approved of another act where there would be more taxes. Colonists would now be taxed for buying and using items such as tea, paper, paint, lead, and glass. This along with the Stamp Act only angered the colonists more and in response they started going against British imports by boycotting and doing protests. This led to the colonists dividing into two groups which were either patriots or loyalists. -
Boston Massacre
A street fight happened between a patriotic mob and riled up the British soldiers. Soon after, seven British soldiers fired into the crowd and killed five civilians. They also injured six other people and angered the rest of the colony leading to the Revolutionary war. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
This battle didn't actually take place on a hill and instead happened at a town called Charlestown which is located just north of Boston. It was considered a deadly and bloody battle and the first major war of the American Revolution. The American troops fought valiantly but lost due to running out of ammunition which gave the victory to the British who fought hard too to keep the town's prized seaport. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is also known as the founding document of the USA. It was approved by the Continental Congress which soon allowed and led to the 13 American Colonies cutting off political ties to Great Britain. Overall this day represents the day that the USA gain freedom from Great Britain who they had been at war with previously. -
Period: to
Battle of Saratoga
This event was considered a turning point for the American colony who won a battle against the British Army. This was due to the large number of soldiers that the American colony had, to where the British just surrendered. This victory boosted the army's morale and even convinced the French, Dutch, and Spanish to join them in fighting against Britain. -
Period: to
Valley Forge
It was a horrible time for the Continental Army who was under George Washington's control at the time. It was an encampment where they had to build their own shelter in the Winter despite a smallpox case traveling around. The disease ended up killing nearly 2,000 soldiers even with determined doctors, nurses, and sanitation procedures to keep them safe. What was supposed to be a safe camp ended up with many bad memories and events for the army. -
Period: to
Battle of Yorktown
Like the title says it was a war that took place in a city called Yorktown which is located in South Eastern Virginia. It was the last and final battle to the American Revolution where the French army and navy helped George Washington's troops. By digging trenches that reached 800 yards all around the British defense line, they managed to entrap the British and therefore won. -
Treaty of Paris
It was the day both sides where the American colony and Great Britain signed a form/treaty where America would now gain independence and have their own territory hence the Western side. This ended the American Revolution and even the Spanish-American war between America and Spain. Overall, this was now the start of the United States of America and what we now know and live at today.
