The Treaty of Paris (ending French and Indian War)
Britain won the war. The terms of the treaty gave Canada to Brtain. This changed the balance of power in North America. -
Stamp Act
It required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal, when they bought paper items. Colonists who refused to buy stamps could be fined or sent to jail. -
Sugar Act
The British needed money to pay for the French and Indian War so they taxed the colonists. They taxed molasses and sugar imported ny colonists. -
Boston Massacre
It started off with one British soldier and one colonist. When they started fighting a crowd came. Shots were fired into the crowd killing three men. -
Tea Act
This allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonists. This caused the Boston Tea Party to happen. -
Boston Tea Party
Colonists dressed up as Indians snuck onto three ships filled with tea. They dumped 340 chests into the Boston Harbor. -
First Continental Congress
All of the colonies except Gorgia met to talk about the troubled relationship between Great Britain and the colonies. They could not agree on going to war or seeking peace. -
Lexington and Concord
The battle at Lexington lasted only minutes. The British only had one wounded soldier, they traveled onto Concord. Because Revere warned that the British were coming they hid most of the weapons in Concord. The British were upset at this and set fire to the buildings. -
Second Continental Congress
This represented the first attempt at a republican government for the colonies. They authorized the Massachusetts militia to become the Continental Army. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The coloniel forces dug in at Breed's Hill. The Redcoats would have to cross Boston Harbor and fight their way uphill. The British ended up winning but lost far more soldiers than the Americans did. -
Olive Branch Petition
This was a final attempt to restore peace. But King George refused to read it. -
Declaration of Rights
This was a list of ten resolutions to be presented to King George III. It included the colonists right to "life, liberty, and property." -
Declaration of Independence
This formally annouced the colonies break from Great Britain. Its expressed 3 main ideas. First, Thomas Jefferson argued that all people posses unalienable rights. Second, Jefferson asserted that King George III had violated the colonists rights by taxing them without their consent. Third, Jefferson stated that the colonies had the right to break from Britain. -
Battle of Trenton
This was am important Patriot victory. On Christmas night Washington and 2400 soldiers marched across the Delaware River. American soldiers took more than 900 prisoners. -
