Sugar Act
This act lowered the tax of Molasses in an attempt to lower smuggling into the colonies. The biggest part of this act is that it placed a hefty tax on sugar. In addition, it issued "Writs of Assistance" which allowed Customs Officers to search any cargo ship for smuggled goods. Colonists thought of these unwarranted searches as an invasion of privacy and resulted in tar and feathering. -
1st Quartering Act
The 1st Quartering act of 1765 required that American Colonists to house, and feed Redcoat British soldiers. This outraged the Americans because this encroached on their property rights, and costed them more money to feed and house these British soldiers. -
Townshend Act
This act repealed the stamp act, but placed taxes on more obscure items. This act taxed commodities such as glass, paint, led, tea, and other small imports. Britain did this to pay the salaries of Governors, Judges, and army powers. This resulted in protests and contributed to the widening gap between the Colonists and their mainland Britain. -
Boston Massacre
This was a BIG turning point of the revolution. In reaction to the Townshend Act, a group of protesters armed with clubs and ice chunks is confronted by British Soldiers on King street in Boston. The soldiers heard the command to fire and shot their muskets into the crowd, killing 6. This fueled the tension between the Colonists and the British and led to acts of violence such as tar and feathering, and more powerful protests. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act allowed the East India Co. to directly ship their tea to the colonies. More importantly it imposed a heavy tax on ALL imported tea. This led to the Boston Tea Party later that year. -
Boston Tea Party
In response to the rising taxes in the colonies imposed by Great Britain, the "Sons Of Liberty" dressed as Native Americans and dumped more than one million dollars worth of imported tea into Boston Harbor. This was felt as a victory to the colonists, but led to further tyranny from the British. -
Intolerable Acts
Contained following acts:
- Boston Port Act (Closed all ship traffic in Boston Harbor)
- Massachusetts Gov. Act (Closed their self- government)
- Justice Act (Any Capital crimes will be tried in Great Britain)
- 2nd Quartering Act ( More soldiers to house)
- Quebec Act (Restored all French civil law, gave freedoms to Canadians, and gave them land we once fought for) This confused the colonists because the British parliament is just giving back what we fought for. Boycotts, non-imports. -
"Shot Heard Around The World" / Battle Of Concord
This was the opening shot of the Battle Of Concord between the American Colonists and Redcoat British soldiers. This skirmish started the American revolutionary war and further led to the establishment of the United States Of America. -
2nd Continental Congress
A group of delegates who meeted during the american revolution. This gave the people a government body to voice their grievances to Great Britain. -
Olive Branch Petition
This was an attempt by the 2nd Continental Congress to avoid war with Great Britain. King George lll thought this was a joke and the rejection fulled the unification of the Colonists. This made them way more powerful and also led to the writing of "Common Sense" (1776) by Thomas Paine. "Common Sense" was a best seller and quickly spread the words of independence and the creation of their own democratic republic.
