    The Alamo

    On February 23, a Mexican force numbering in the thousands and led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna began a siege of the fort. Though vastly outnumbered, the Alamo’s 200 defenders held out for 13 days before the Mexican forces finally overpowered them. For Texans, the Battle of the Alamo became an enduring symbol of their resistance to oppression and their struggle for independence.

    The Battle of the Neches, the main engagement of the Cherokee War of 1838–1839, took place on 15–16 July in 1839 in what is now the Redland community. It resulted from the Córdova Rebellion and Texas President Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar's determination to remove the Cherokee people from Texas.

    Battle of Plum Creek
    The Battle of Plum Creek was a clash between allied Tonkawa, militia, and Rangers of the Republic of Texas and a huge Comanche war party under Chief Buffalo Hump, which took place near Lockhart, Texas, on August 12, 1840. This battle was an aftermath of the Council House Fight, in which many of the Comanche Indian chiefs, women, and warriors were killed. The result was a victory Texian victory.
