Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act

    This act reduced the tariff Colonists had to pay but enforced it better. The Colonists rioted and harassed tariff collector and inspectors. The British Government passed the Stamp Act.
  • Quartering Act (The first one)

    This act required that the Colonists provide food and housing for the army. The Colonists refused and resisted. The British Government passed the Restraining Act.
  • Stamp Act

    This act put a tax on all paper (ex. newspaper, cards, dice, legal documents.) The colonists boycotted British goods, harassed tax collectors, published names of non-boycotters. The British Government repealed the act the following year.
  • Declaratory Act

    This act gave the British Government complete control over the colonies. The Americans didn't really notice at first? The British government pushed for more taxes and control of smuggling with their new power.
  • Restraining Act

    This act suspended a colony's assembly until it complied to the Quartering act. The Colonists did as they were told but were upset. The British Government continued to pass and revise acts.
