  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    • There couldn't be any colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains.
    • Violating the Proclamation of 1763, colonists still moved west of the Appalachians.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    • 1/2 taxed the colonists on molasses hoping that they would stop smuggling it.
    • The colonists still smuggled it.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    • For every legal document, license, newspaper, pamphlet, and almanac, you had to have a special stamped paper.
    • The Sons of Liberty was created and harassed custom workers, stamped agents, and occasionally royal governors. Soon after the Stamped act was created the colonies met together to issue a Declaration of Rights.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

    Repeal of Stamp Act
    • In March, the stamped act became repealed because of parliament. To make power clear they issued another act, known as, the Declaratory Act.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    • The colonists broke out into a fight over the competition over jobs and the first fist fight broke out over the jobs.
    • Activists called this the Boston Massacre because it presented as a British attack on defenseless citizens.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    • This was issued to help struggling English Tea Companies.
    • A later incident involving men dressed as Indians to dump 18,000 pounds of tea into the waters of the Boston Harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    • Responding to the Boston Tea Party, the Intolerable Acts were issued. This act shut down the Boston Harbor and issued another act known as the Quartering Act. The Quartering Act allowed British soldiers to vacant private homes. To help get peace in Boston, Thomas Paine imposed military forces.
    • Colonies quickly moved to get the 1st continental Congress.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    • This was issued in result to the Intolerable Acts. 12 of the 13 colonies sent representatives to meet in response to the Intolerable Acts.
    • Colonists sent in petitions to England because of the oppressive legislation. They told colonies to prepare for their militias, which is a volunteer army.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    • General Gage wants to seize illegal weapons so he sends troops to Concord.
    • Paul Revere hears about the redcoats and warns everyone. This was also the Shot Heard Around the World.
  • Thomas Paine

    Thomas Paine
    • Thomas Paine wrote Common sense that moved more colonists towards independence.
