    Clash between the British and the Chinese. Battles mostly took place at sea. In 1842, they signed a peace treaty called the "Treaty of Nanjing".

    Taiping Rebellion
    Treaty of Narjing granted Christian missionaries increased privledges in China. Taiping means great peace. Hong organized an army of mostly peasants from Southern China.
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    United Staes declared this. This policy proposed that China's doors be open to merchants of all nations. Britain and other European nations agreed. This then protected American trading rights in China and Chinas freedom from colonization.
  • Sphere of Influence

    Sphere of Influence
    a region in which foreign natin controlled trade and investment. Many Europeans main political powers and Japan gained a strong foothold in China. This later leads to the Open Door Policy.
