    Ivan the terrible
    Ivan the Terrible was crowned Czar at just the ago of 16. His expansion plan consisted of moving in on Siberia, Soon though, Ivan’s life took a dramatic turn, strikingly changing his personality and his policies. In 1553 he suffered a near-fatal illness and several years later his beloved wife Anastasia died.
  • Saint Basil's Cathedral

    Another name for it is The Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat. The original building, known as "Trinity Church" and later "Trinity Cathedral", contained eight side churches arranged around the ninth, central church of Intercession; the tenth church was erected in 1588 over the grave of venerated local saint Basil.

    In 1703, Peter began his most magnificent project: the construction of a new city in the north, in a swampy area where the Neva River drained into Lake Ladoga. It was a harsh environment, and Peter was a brutal taskmaster. Over 100,000 workers perished during the first year of construction.

    Following the death of Alexis, Peter arranged a grand tour of Western Europe, the so called Great Embassy to learn about the West. He traveled incognito, and refused to be recognized as Czar; he even dressed as a member of his own entourage, although it is doubtful that he fooled anyone because of his great height.The reason for the Great Embassy has been a subject of debate among historians.

    At the time of Peter’s death in 1725, Russia controlled territory six times greater than at the time of Ivan the Terrible. The Russian empire was thirty times larger than that of France.

    When Peter l died, Elizabeth picked a German princess. Her name was Catherine. After they married, in 1762 Peter took control of the throne and Catherine began her plot to take over the Russian Empire.
