    Religious Restriction for Voting
    Many people were restricted from voting because of their beliefs.
    People who wanted to vote in the colonies had to be a male Puritans who owned land. They said they were the Chosen Few to lead the colonies. It slowly lifted the restriction but you still had to be a male who owned land.
  • Pilgrims

    Pilgrims
    The Pilgrims were people who wanted the freedom
    to choose their beliefs and religion. It started when in England people had to practice “State Church”. This caused distaste to the church and brought some people into jail, torture, and even execution. So the Pilgrims wanted the choice to follow what church they wanted.
  • Puritans

    The puritans were a group of people who opposed the church but they did it in a more strict and hostile way.
    The Puritans moved to the Colonies so they could set up their own church with their own beliefs.They were not as different to the church in England but they practiced a belief.
  • Maryland

    Maryland
    Maryland was a colony made to be a refuge for Catholics and in turn to create a profit for the Lord of Baltimore. It created catholic colony that is tolerant of other religions. It also brought people from England who practiced Catholicism but mainly brought in people who wanted to make some money into the colony. The experiment to bring in Catholics brought more people who wanted to make a living than practice Catholicism freely.

    Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts bay and founded Rhode Island. He was kicked out with his idea of separation of church and state. And for the second reason he was banished was to properly pay the Native Americans rather than stealing their land. Rhode Island had open freedom of religion and anyone could practice any belief they wanted. It has brought in immigrants for the reason the practice their beliefs openly.

    The Puritans have been stricter in their teaching and less tolerant of others' faith and change in such fate. This led to people like Anne Hutchinson to create their own colonies. When the Puritans banished Anne Hutchinson from Massachusetts bay she created her own colony. The colony practiced a more open idea of their religion. It was also tolerant of other people’s faith and helped grow this colony.
  • Quakers

    Quakers
    William Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania
    which was a safeguard for anyone who wanted religious freedom. The quakers believed in equality for all people no matter the position or race. They were pacifist and troubled the English Crown. So William Penn made a colony which practiced freedom of religion. Many immigrants who came to Pennsylvania came for the freedom of religion.

    The Great Awakening
    It is an event where religion was reformed and changed how people believed through Europe and its colonies. It swept through the colonies reforming the idea of how religion should be practiced and changed some colonies to act accordingly.
  • Virginia Statutes for Religious Freedom

    Virginia Statutes for Religious Freedom
    Virginia established a Church for its colony but was given the freedom to practice any religion. Virginia allowed people to practice any religion even though they established their own church. This soon led to almost every colony to have a freedom of religion.
