    James Alipius Goold was appointed the first Bishop of Melbourne in 1848. He was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1812. He built schools and several churches, including St John's, and became the first and most reputable bishop in Melbourne.

    The first St Mary's Cathedral in College Street, Sydney was destroyed by fire. The only things that remained were the belltower. After the cathedral was burnt down, plans for a new cathedral were drawn up and the foundation stone of the building was laid in late 1868. The new and rebuilt cathedral was finished in 1928. This is significant in Australia's history for being the first land granted to the Catholic Church in Australia.
