In 1927 general electric refrigerator named Monditer Top became the first refrigerator to have wide spread use, over a million units were produced for purchase. It's compressor assembly emitted a lot of heat was placed above the cabinet. These refrigerators used sulfur dioxide or methyl formate as a regenerate which was later linked to death. -
