Julius and Ethel Rosenburg became the first civilians in the US to be convicted and sentenced to death for espionage. -

McCarthy challenges the political loyalty of the U.S army. With little hard evidence he lost public support and negative public opinion rose. -

This incident occured during the Cold war when a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down over the airspace of the soviet union
