Military gives 40 acres
General William T. Sherman issues Special Field Order 15, setting aside confiscated plantation land in the Sea Islands and alonbg the coast of South Carolina and Georgia for black families to settle in 40 acre plots. Some 40,000 freedmen and women are living on the land by June. -
The Depression of 1873
Over speculation in the railroad industry manufactoring, and a flood of Americans taking out bad bank loans slid the economy into the worst depression in American history. Millions lost jobs unemployment climbed as high as 15%. -
Reconstruction Ends, "Redemtion" Begins
After taking office Hayes withdraws the federal troops from the South. The last Radical State governments collapse and the redemtion period begins. -
Civil RIghts Act of 1875 Enacted by Congress
Gurantees equal rights to African Americans in public accomodations and jury service. Ruled unconstitutional in 1883.
