First time I remember someone reading me a book
I have an older sister and growing up we shared a room. I was around 3 years old and she was 13 when she would read to me before going to bed. I remember she would always say that she wanted to pretend she was my mom and read me a book at night. The first few books I remember her reading to me was about princesses I loved princesses growing up.

Read Alouds Were My Favorite in School
In Kindergarten i was very shy. My first language was not English. Most of the teachers directions I was unable to understand but one thing I loved was when we were called onto the big abc rug. We had assigned seats and I loved read aloud time. I wouldn’t understand the words but I would translate the images and create my own story.

When I was finally able to read a book on my own.
My second grade teacher pushed me to read every day. By the end of second grade I was finally capable of reading a book on my own. This is also when she introduced reading plays/ skits.
  • The 3 little pigs

    The 3 little pigs
This is an important part in my reading journey because this is where I finally began to like reading. My second grade teacher told me there was more to reading and that many stories could also be acted out. For my second grade talent show my classmate and I acted out the three little pigs skit. After that this began to be my favorite book to read.
  • Middle school: I hated reading

    Middle school: I hated reading
I lost interest in reading when I got to middle school. I was no longer forced to complete reading logs as homework so I simply wouldn’t read anymore. And in elementary school we would get incentives and prizes for reading books

“Reading is not allowed in high school”
I remember slowly gaining interest to read before going into high school. I had a yearbook class where sometimes we would finish early and have 20 minutes to ourselves to make time pass quicker I decided to take my book. And well I hate to say it but one time I got made fun of for reading a book. I was told reading was for lame people and then again i stopped reading books.

    Trending TikTok books
I will admit that I get influenced from social media to do and buy things. Well for a while tiktok kept talking about an author named Colleen Hoover who writes romance books and I absolutely loved this genre.
  • Diverse literacy course

    Diverse literacy course
I am taking a Diverse Literacy course where I have to read several books. Before I would have been upset about reading books but ever since I discovered romance books I am happy I get to read new books. I also enjoy audiobooks. In this course we had to read diverse literature about diverse authors. My favorite book from the ones I have read this semester is The Hate You Give By Angie Thomas. This is a great young adult I think it well help young adults get into reading. Definitely recommend.

Now I’m the one performing the read alouds.
I am a substitute teacher and I mainly focus on elementary school children because that’s essentially what I want to teach. I love reading to students when they’re extra time. My diverse literature course this semester definitely influenced me to promote diverse literature in classrooms. I always carry the book We Are All Welcome by Alexandra Penfold to read to students. I want to continue reading diverse literature to introduce to future students.
