Reading History

  • Age 6

    Age 6
    When I was around six years old, I started to read more fluently in English. The first book I remember reading is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I added this to my timeline because I learned to read in English first, then Spanish.
  • Age 7

    Age 7
    At the age of seven, I moved to Mexico. I continued schooling there and learned reading in Spanish. My first language is Spanish, so it wasn't difficult. I added this to the timeline because, during this time, reading and speaking in English were interrupted.
  • Age 8

    Age 8
    At the age of eight, I moved back to the U.S and had to relearn everything, including reading in English and writing. I added this to my timeline because I took my first second language learner assessment.
  • Third Grade

    Third Grade
    I'm adding this to my timeline because my third-grade teacher is important to me. After all, she encourage and provided many reading opportunities that have contributed to my education.
  • Age 10

    I'm adding this to the timeline because when I was around ten years old, I was taken out of ESL classes and put into full-time regular classes with my teacher. I believe this meant I was able to read and write enough to comprehend the lesson independently.
  • Age 13

    I'm adding this event to my timeline because in 8th grade. I had a teacher who had a strict class. Her class was hard, but I learned to read actively and engage with the reading material.
  • Age 15

    Age 15
    I'm adding this to my timeline because, during this time, reading was difficult to understand. Poems and authors like Shakespeare were difficult to understand because of the wording.
  • Age 16

    Age 16
    In 11th grade of high school, I took my last ESL Assessment. I'm adding this to the timeline because it took me many years to score out on the assessment. This assessment involved mostly reading with a small speaking section.
  • Age 19

    Age 19
    In 2018, my first year of college, I had to take a noncredit class because my English reading/writing score wasn't sufficient to take a regular English college-level class. I'm adding this to my timeline because I still had to improve my reading/writing skills after graduating high school.
  • age 20

    age 20
    I'm adding this year to the timeline because I realized I enjoyed reading independently. I have many books I enjoyed reading through school assignments, but I always thought of it as a task.
