Bedtime Stories (3 years old)
My dad would always read my favorite book to me when I was a little girl- I always insisted on him reading Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. -
Early Mornings (5 years old)
My dad, sister, and I lived with my grandpa for a few years after my parents separated. I was always an early riser, so I would wait until I heard my grandpa's door open to leave my own room. Every morning he would be in his recliner, cup of coffee in hand, reading glasses on, and a newspaper spread wide open. I would climb up on his lap and pretend to read the paper until I asked him to get me a bowl of cereal for breakfast. -
AR (first grade)
When I was in first grade I began a program called Accelerated Reader, or AR for short. I was never particularly fond of AR, but I did gain a boost in confidence because I was reading at a higher level than my classmates. -
The Whipping Boy (3rd grade)
The first AR test that I ever failed was after I read a book called, "The Whippng Boy". I literally thought my life was going to end, I had never been so afraid to go home and tell my parents about how my day at school went. I never failed a test after that, considering I had to read at least 30 minutes a day. -
Beginning "Harry Potter"
My older sister had been reading Harry Potter for a few years before I started, and to be honest it took me nearly three years to finish the first book, but after I really got into them. My sister is 4 years older than me so to have something in common with her when she was in high school was very exciting. As a new book or new movie came out over the years it always gave us time to spend together. -
"Romeo and Juliet" (9th grade)
In my freshman year of high school we read and reenacted Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". I was overly romantic then and had even developed a crush on a boy in my class. On the day we read the balcony scene I was cast as Juliet and my crush was Romeo! I read the rest of the play with maybe a little too much optimism. -
Summer Read (10th Grade)
The summer read for my sophomore year in high school was a book about South Africa's apartheid, called "Cry, the Beloved Country". I did not enjoy this book at all; whether it was too complex for my understanding or because my teacher did not help explain those concepts well I don't know. Either way, it was one of the few books in school that I did not enjoy. -
"Pride and Prejudice" (12th Grade)
It was in my senior year of high school that I read "Pride and Prejudice". It became my favorite book. What I liked most about it was that despite human flaws, love remains and prospers. -
Current
Currently I have been reading historical fiction. I especially like Dan Brown's novels like, "The Da Vinci Code". I would like to read "The Book Thief" soon as well as more dystopian novels.
