Reading History

  • Favorite book

    Favorite book
As a small child before I started school I remember my mom got me a book called, "Carlos and the Squash Plant". This book was in English and Spanish, my mom would read it to me in Spanish and my older sister would read it to me in English. This book was the first book that was ever read to me.
  • Kindergarten

    Kindergarten
In Kindergarten parents were invited to school to read to the class and my father read the book called, "Goodnight Moon". After the reading my father gave me the book as a gift and I would read it with him every night. I still have this book to this day.
  • Book Fair

    Book Fair
School book fairs is when I started to explore my reading journey. I was always excited to attend the fair and get books and cool bookmarks.
  • First Chapter Book

    First Chapter Book
My first chapter book that I read was, "Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus". This was and still is one of my favorite kids books. I read this book with my niece often.
  • Bad Experience

    Bad Experience
My first bad experience with reading was in second grade. My teacher read us Harry Potter books out loud every day. This was a boring experience because we were expected to just sit and listen. Unfortunately this experience discouraged me from reading thick chalet books.
  • Mini Books

    Mini Books
During the summer I loved to read books about dogs and make mini books. This was an important time in my reading journey because it reminds me how much fun I was having while reading.
  • Student Mentor

    Student Mentor
It wasn't until Fourth grade that I rediscovered the joy in reading. In the beginning of the school year all students were assigned a middle school student mentor. This mentor asked me what my least favorite subject was and I said, "reading". She made it her mission to help me love reading again. We would meet at the school library every week and read all types of books from picture books to chapter books. Charlotte's Web was my favorite book this year.
  • Notes

    Notes
In middle school I found myself struggling yet again with reading. Teachers would often assign us to do book reports on certain academic books, as I struggled to write my book report one teacher advised me to write and take notes at the same time. As simple as this method sounds it helped me so much with reading these books that were assigned to us. To this day I still use this method when reading.
  • Read

    Read
Although my relationship with reading has not always been positive, I can now say that I enjoy reading. Even when it's a book I don't want to read I know how to engage in the book and understand its meaning/story. My Reading journey has taught me what not to do when it comes to reading and how to engage others/ students in reading.
  • Today

    Today
My favorite books to read today are fiction books and children's books to my nieces and nephews. I believe that it's important to switch things up and read new genres. Reading teaches us so much but you can also teach so much by reading to others.
