Bedtime Stories With Mom
I remember my Mom reading bedtime stories to me. She says that I was very interested in turning the pages. -
Library Trips
My mom would take us to the library weekly and let us choose our own books. This helped me learn what I was interested in. -

Where the Red Fern Grows
My teacher read "Where the Red Fern Grows" aloud to the class. It was the first time I'd read/listened to a long book and was enthralled by the story. -
Religious Text
I remember trying to read a passage in the Bible and was having a hard time understanding it. My dad came to help me and drew a picture of what was happening to help me understand what was going on. It really helped me to understand and became a tool that I used in the future when I needed some help. -
MacBeth
In 7th grade we read and performed MacBeth. It was a struggle for me to understand and I really wasn't interested in the storyline. I've always had a bad taste in my mouth over Shakespeare since then. -
Beloved
We read this book in 11th grade and I absolutely hated it. I felt that my teacher was unhelpful and condescending and it made me dislike him and the course. In reality, I was probably just too immature and unprepared for the book. Needless to say, I haven't tried any more Toni Morrison. -
College Textbooks
When I got to college I realized that I didn't know how to read textbooks very effectively. I had to quickly learn to use the tools in the book and find strategies that worked. -
Random Family
While backpacking in Europe I ran out of books to read. I stopped at an English Bookstore in Berlin and found a book called "Random Family". It was a memoir and has had me hooked on memoirs every since. -
Reading to my Children
These days, reading to my children is my favorite reading activity. I love to see the way that they're developing into readers and hope to help this continue.
