ABC's
When I was four years old I learned the alphabet. This is the foundation of getting interested in reading to see that one can put the alphabet together and make words and use it in sentences or in a song. -
Dr. Seuss
In first grade, I remember the teacher reading Dr. Seuss books to us. They were catchy and fun and made me interested to read more Dr. Seuss books. There was a collection of Dr. Seuss books and I wanted to read them all. -
Scholastic Book Fair
In school, I loved it when the book fair would come to school. I would get to buy a book and take it home; it was a fun event that I always looked forward to and it kept me interested in reading. -
Rewards
For finishing books and then going to the computer to take a test on it, I would get a prize from the reward chest. This encouraged me to finish as many books as I can. -
Nancy Drew chapter books
Nancy Drew was the first chapter book I read. It is a mystery book and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happens. This book kept me from reading picture books and encouraged me to read chapter books. -
Harry Potter
Harry Potter was the longest book I ever read. It was really popular and it got me wanting to read it too. This book improved my reading. The books had words that the author made up and I had to figure out what these words meant by reading the story for context clues. -
Magazines
I use to love magazines; there was a time I didn't want to read anything but magazines. They came with posters that I could hang them on the wall and there were little quizzes and horoscopes. I would finish reading a magazine and go buy another. -
Letters
In middle school, I would write letters to friends and they would write back to me. This was a fun activity that allowed me to stay connected to friends while also improving my reading and writing skills. -
Book stores
Growing up, there use to be book stores inside the mall and my friends and I would always go in there. We would look at all the books and magazines and spend a lot of time in the book store reading bits of books. I added this because the mall was a place where I use to hang out a lot and it kept reading fun. -
SAT
Doing practice SATs and reading different topics to expand my knowledge for the test really pushed my comprehension skills.
