Problem
The main problem in the story was the Civil War. It was where the north and the south were fighting against because of a few significant things. It was a lot of violence and it made times hard for everyone. -
Rising Action #1
Many steamboats and ferries are coming through Grand Tower, which gives the family a few economic advantages to sell their resources. -
Rising Action #2
Noah had always wanted to go fight in the war when he was old enough and played with his friends that they were all soldiers, but Mama was afraid this dream would become reality. -
Rising Action #3
Cass sees dead people and witnesses a tragedy, where there were dead people in a river from a sunken boat. She always acts suspicious of others because of her visions. -
Rising Action #4
Delphine and Calinda, two girls heading up north from New Orleans trying to escape the battle for a while, come and stay with the Pruitts after Mama's approval. Cass seems very suspicious about them and Noah seems a little obsessed with Delphine. -
Rising Action #6
People in Grand Tower start to think that Calinda and Delphine are spies for the south. They began to think that they should not be trusted and they need to be careful of what they say around them about the war. However, Mrs. Pruitt didn't believe it. -
Rising Action #7
A showboat comes by, Calinda and Delphine attend with some of the Pruitt family. At the event, they discover that Calinda's real name is "Coin-Coin," but got renamed because of how well she was at dancing to the "Calinda" song. -
Rising Action #8
While the showboat is there, Noah asks Delphine to dance, which establishes some sort of relationship. Dr. Hutchings asks Tilly to dance as well and everyone has a blast. -
Rising Action #9
Being that Tilly and Noah are twins, they celebrate their birthday together. Noah has been acting suspicious, quiet and different lately, the family realizes something is coming up. -
Rising Action #12
Noah leaves for the war just after they celebrate their birthday quickly and quietly "like a thief in the night," which means he left fast because he didn't want to deal with the sadness. -
Rising Action #10
Delphine starts more kind and nice to the family. She buys the family a new dress. -
Rising Action #11
Cass and Calinda start to be friends even though they didn't like eachother at first. They had an unusual bond and had a language together that no one else understood. -
Rising Action #12
Noah decides to go fight in the south in the thirty-first regiment and doesn't talk to Mama about it. -
Rising Action #5
Cass thinks that Calinda is trying to kill Delphine, when she walks by their room and sees one of the girls laying on the bed, while the other's knee is on the back of the girl. She freaks out and Mama reassures her that she was just tightening Delphine's corset. -
President Lincoln's Inauguration
This is where Abraham Lincoln took the oath and was officially blessed or as you can say, given the spot as President. In his speech, he talked about showing his support to the North, but not ignoring the South. For guidance, he referred back to historical documents. -
Climax
Noah decides to go to fight in the Battle of Belmont located in Cairo, Illinois. Mama sends Tilly and Delphine to go get Noah. She tells them not to come home until they have him. Mama goes crazy and depressed. -
Falling Action #1
Delphine and Tilly go find Noah, but he is not doing well and they see how bad the living conditions are for the soldiers in the hospital, so they help. They bring blankets and food for the soldiers, making it a better living environment. -
Falling Action #3
Noah gets sent home with Tilly and Delphine. While Mama sees a cascet coming down the stream, she automatically thought that it was Noah and drowned herself in the river, but really it was her husband that was fighting for the south the whole time. -
Falling Action #2
Mrs. Hanahran notices that Delphine is an African American and says hurtful things to her. It makes Delphine feel bad because she was saying that she should just go back to where she came from and more. -
Attack of Fort Sumter Begins
General Beauregard of the Confederate Army at Charleston, South Carolina, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Garrison commander Anderson said no. On April 12, Confederate Army opened fire on the fort, which was unable to reply fast enough. On April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the fort on the next day. -
Resolution
Tilly and Delphine bring Noah home, but he is left with one arm from the war. Tilly marries Dr. Hutchings. On the other hand, Delphine and Noah don't marry because it is illegal for their races to get together, but they have a child and name it Howard Hutchings. The story all ends with Tilly telling Howard the whole story the entire time. -
The First Battle of the Bulls
It was the first major battle in the civil war on land. It was when 35,000 Union troops marched from the federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force of 20,000 along a small river known as Bull Run. -
The Battle of Belmont Begins
It was the first major test for Grant. The Union Soldiers attacked the confederates and they all returned back to Cairo, Illinois. -
