In 1989 DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith won the first rap Grammy. The Rap and Hip-Hop community boycotted the whole ceremony because they weren't going to be televised. -
Tupac and Biggie Rivalry
Tupac and Biggies Rivalry wasn't just them conflicting. It was a civil war between the West Coast and the East Coast. Tupac Shakur under "Death Row Records" represented the West Coast. While Biggie Smalls under "Bad Boy Records" represented the East Coast. This rivalry brought the biggest spotlight to hip-hop and rap had ever had. -
Kanye Sample
Kanye dropped his album "College Dropout" he made a lot of songs sampling old music. It changed the way people rapped, and it became a normal thing to sample other songs to rap over. -
Micheal Jackson Race
He broke the barrier of race in Hip-Hop. He was the first African American to achieve that level of success. He got his icon status by creating music that transcended genres. -
Playboi Carti
Playboi Carti used sounds from synthesizers and sampling to make futuristic sounding songs and using rock star persona and fashion which influenced the current generation. -
Kendrick Lamar Pulitzer Prize
Many people fell out of love for Rap and Hip/Hop after the murders of Tupac and Biggie. Most people related everything Hip-Hop as just bad news. Many artists dug down into gangster rap and stayed there. Others like Kendrick Lamar chose a different path. He won the Pulitzer Prize with his album in 2017 "DAMN" Which made him the first MC to win this award that wasn't from the Jazz or Classical music genres. Which brought light back to the hip-hop scene. -
Kanye Record Labels
Kanye West used his image and his likeness for artists to realize they didn't need distributors to release music because he feels they take too much money from the artist. He made himself controversial so Labels would not want him, so he could be independent and after him many followed.
