    Plessy v. Ferguson
    The law that states people are seperate but equal. Plessy, who was caucasian, sat in a "whites only" car of a train and refused to move and was arrested. (oyez.org)
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Americans expeted the President, courts and congress to live up to the 14th amendment. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act that stated it was forbidden to discriminate the sex or race in hiring promoting or firing (archives.gov).
    Malcolm X was a member of the NOI and after he resigned he was assassinated by another member of the NOI.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    African American parents tried to enroll their children into an all white school.These parents were told that their children had to go to one of the four African American schools. The parents filed a law suit and later won and were able to send their children to the all white school (thinkquest.com).
    Thurgood Marshall- He was the cheif council of the NAACP (gmu.edu).
    NAACP- An organization that ensured political, educational, social and economic equaliy rights for African Americans (naacp.org).
  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott & Rosa Parks

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott & Rosa Parks
    ROSA PARKS and three other Africn American people were sitting in the colored section. The Montgomery bus driver told each of them that they needed to get up so a white person could sit down and not have to sit near an African American. Rosa Parks refused to get up and was sent to jail (ushistory.org).
  • The Little Rock Nine

    The Little Rock Nine
    A group of nine African American sudents that were supporting desergregation in Little Rock Central HIgh School. They were to be escorted into the schools by the National Gaurd. One of the sudents was not aware that everyone was nt to enter at the front of the building and was harrassed (encyclopediaofarkansas.net).
  • SCLC

    SCLC
    A group of southerners who wanted to end segregation and advance the cause of the Civil Rights but without violence. The president of the SCLC was Martin Luther King JR. Martin Luther King was the president until his assassination (historylearningsite.co.uk).
  • Sit-ins

    Sit-ins
    African Americans were tired of segregation and not being able to come in and eat at a diner. African Americans decided that they were going to go into a resteraunt and sit there until they were served (usatoday.com).
  • SNCC

    SNCC
    People from the sit ins became leaders of this organization. These student remained very independent. These students were very reluctant to compromise (stanford.edu).
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    LBJ signed the voting rights into law. This law came seven months after Martin Luther King launched the SCLC. This day was called ‘‘a triumph for freedom as huge as any victory that has ever been won on any battlefield’’ (stanford,edu).

    Assassination of Martin Luther King JR
    Martin Luther King was outside his hotel room when he had been shot on the right side of his face. He had been talking to colleagues from the SCLC when the assassin shot him (stanford.edu).
