Ram Development

  • Magnetic Drum Memory

The first storage device made by the US navy. It used Magnetic memory that was stored on the outer layer of a rotating cylinder.
  • UNIVAC UNISERVO tape drive

the company UNIVAC created the first tape drive for commercial use. They were also cheap. Specifications were 1/2 wide, 0.0015 thick and about 1500 cm long they could store about 1,440,000 decimal digits of data and could read this data at 100 inches a second.
  • IBM 726 Magnetic tape

this was one of the first "high-speed" magnetic tape systems for computers. It was announced on may 21st. It used a vacuum channel to keep a loop of tape circulating between two points it used to cost $850 a month to rent out.
  • Whirlwind core memory

MIT was the first to develop something called core memory. They used very small circles with holes in them made with magnetic material connected to wires. Each core stored a bit of data.
  • RAMAC

This was the start of magnetic disk storage it was the first hard disk technology that could store data, It had 50 magnetically coated metal patters that could store around 5,000,000 characters of data.
  • Bryant Chucking Grinder Company magnetic disk drive

exploring new storage ideas the started to develop a disk drive made up of horizontal shafts with 8 disks more than 39 inches
  • Magnetostrictive delay lines

This was a small computer that was low cost designed for businesses. it used a simple programming language. its memory consists of Magnetostrictive delay lines. It was a thin strip of metal rolled into a coil.
  • Atlas Computer

Virtual memory becomes a concept. It was used to swish between programs very fast
