Queen Elizabeth issued a charter that allowed Raleigh to go out and discover remote lands so they could produce products and make colonies for more people to live there so they could become the most powerful of Spain and France. -
Heading Out
Although Sir Raleigh did not lead that ships out he funded and authorized them. Philip Amada and Arthur Barlowe commanded the ships that sat sail on April 27, 1584. -
Land!
On July 13, 1584 Raleigh's ships landed on the coast of North Carolina. This was the first time England had thier flag waving in the New World. -
The Second Voyage
Raleigh sent a second expedition to Roanoke Island.
