Leaving England
In April 1585, seven ships with about 600 men left England -
Suffering of the Colony
Lane's colony of 107 men only lasted for about eight months. They explored the countryside trying to find a better site for development, but were unsuccessful. They suffered because of the lack of supplies and Lane's lack of skill when dealing with the Indians. Lane decided to leave the colony and their condition for success was unfavorable because of the colonies small size and the ravages of storms. -
Arriving
They arrived at the Outer Banks by June. By August, the Colony had come ashore and built a fort following an Invitation from the Indians. -
The Beginning
In 1585 the queen recalled Lane from Ireland and he was given command of the colony that Sir Walter Raleigh was organizing to sail to Virginia -
Going home
On June 18th or 19th, 1586 a fleet led by Sir Francis Drake left Roanoke carrying the first English colonist back home.
