    Dr. Martin Luther King Junior appoints Rev. Jesse Lee to serve as the first director of Operation Breadbasket in Chicago, IL. The merger of the two organizations occurred in 1996 when Rev. Jackson moved back to Chicago after serving as a shadow senator for Washington, D.C. The merger formed the Rainbow PUSH Coalition with a mission to protect, defend, and gain civil rights.

    In 1971, three years after the sad assassination of Martin Luther King Jr in Memphis, TN, Reverend Jackson founded Operation P.U.S.H. This accrued in Chicago and continued the work of Dr. King. PUSH, was an organization dedicated to improving the economic conditions of black communities in America.

    The Black Expo
    Jackson also started a campaign against legalizing abortion after Roe v. PUSH was concerned with minority youth reading. The Black Expo was designed to expose African American Businesses.

    Washington D.C
    In 1984, the National Rainbow Coalition was formed in Washington after Reverend Jackson's first presidential campaign. Rainbows focus was on gaining equal rights for all Americans. The National Rainbow Coalition opposed Ronald Regan’s policies for reducing domestic spending by the government.

    The Nation Rainbow Coalition and Operation PUSH Join to make the Rainbow Push Coalition. Rev. Jackson moved back to Chicago after serving as a shadow senator for Washington, D.C. from 1991 to 1996.
