Congress approves
Congress funded multiple routes for the proposed railroad system. Surveyors were sent out to explore the american west and find possible routes for the railroads. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Proposed by senator Stephen Douglas, this act was designed to win the approval of Chicago so a railroad could stem from the city. The Civil war delayed the production of this act. -
Republican Congress
Finally providing constructed for the railroad system, the railroad was planned to be constructed by two different companies.Both recieved grants and land and a 30 year grovernment loan for each mile constructed. -
Promontory, Utah
This is where the two lines finally met. Leland Standford was the last person to drive a spike into the railroad. -
Additional lines
The northern Pacific railroad stretched from lake Superior to Portland Oregon, then from Santa Fe to Kansas to L.A. The Southern Pacific railroad connected L.A to New Orleans. -
