Russel Markert Starts the Missouri Rockets after seeing The Tiller Girls
After seeing the Tiller Girls perform Russel Markert wanted to get a line of women with longer legs who could not only kick, but do jazz and tap dance with precision. The Missouri Rockets were an instant sensation and in under one year they would be discovered by showman, S.L. Rothafel. -
Roxy discovers the Missouri Rockets
Showman S.L. Rothafel, a.k.a. ROXY, discovered the girls. He loved them so much he changed their name to be more showy, and femine, he called them The Roxyettes. He also brought them all back to NYC with him to perform in his theater, The Roxy. The girls became extremely popular in the city, becoming a popular show for New Yorkers to go see every night. -
Radio City Music Hall opened
Roxy collaborated with John D. Rockfeller to build a theater that would be affordble for regular people to go to, but make them feel luxourious on the inside. The theater was also designed with the Roxyettes in mind. The stage was built to accomadate 36 kicking women. On opening night stars like martha Graham, Ray Bolger, and The Flying Wallendas shared the stage with the Roxyettes. The Roxyettes brought an even bigger, star studded audience than before. -
The Christmas Spectacular begins, called "Rockettes and a Movie"
Once again, the girls changed their name. From 1933 and on they would be called the Rockettes. After The Theater opened the Rockettes attracted so many audience members they started a show for the girls to perform in. A movie would be shown and then the girls would dance the two numbers, Parade of the Wooden Solider, and The Nativity Scene, which are both still in the show today. The Christmas spectacular has become a tradition and is celebrating their 86th year this year. -
The movie goes away and The Rockettes perform the whole show
Due to their fame, the movie showing with the girls dances were siezed. The girls performed the whole show. Also, a spring show was added around Easter time, for the girls to rehearse, and perform year round. -
Rockettes started a touring cast
The Rockettes fame increased so much, so they decided to bring the Rockettes all over the country by having a touring cast visit big cities in America. -
The 75th Anniversary of The Christmas Spectacular
For the 75th anniversary of The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, NBC broadcasted an one hour television special about the Rockette sand the Christmas Spectacular. It was hosted by Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer. A DVD of the show was released as well. -
The tour increased to reach 22 cities and The Rockettes performed on Dancing With The Stars
The Rockettes did a tour that reached 22 cities in America and over one million tickets were sold for the touring show. During the season, The Rockettes also did a public performance on Dancing With The Stars to boost their name. -
New choreography and technology
A new dance was introduced to the show that not only amped up the difficulty of the show for the dancers, but also the crew. The dance uses elevvators,the revolving platforms on the stage, technnology to make the performance 3D, and the largest LED screen in the world. They also published two books about the Rockettes behind the scenes and through history. All of the new improvements and additions brought more audience members than ever. -
Coming Soon: Spring Show
Because the Christmas Spectacular has gotten so big again, The Rockettes are reintroducing a spring show in 2014 to continue the Rockettes tradition all year long. This brings full time Rockette positions, new choreography, and a whole new story line. The show is a tour around New York City, with some history of the perfoming arts parts of the city. The choreography is the hardest and most challenging it has ever been.
