  • X-rays were discovered in 1895 - By Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen

X-rays were discovered in 1895 - By Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen
-Working with a cathode-ray tube, Roentgen observed a fluorescent glow of crystals on a table near his tube.
    - Tube was consisted of a glass envelope (bulb) with positive and negative electrodes encapsulated in it. The air in the tube was evacuated, and when a high voltage was applied, the tube produced a fluorescent glow.
    - Roentgen shielded the tube with heavy black paper, and discovered a green colored fluorescent light generated by a material located a few feet away from the tube.
  • J. J. Thomson of Britain

    J. J. Thomson of Britain
    • Discovers the electron.
    • J.J. Thomson's experiments with cathode ray tubes showed that all atoms contain tiny negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons
    • Thomson's plum pudding model of the atom had negatively-charged electrons embedded within a positively-charged "soup."
  • American Roentgen Ray Society

    American Roentgen Ray Society
    • Founded in 1900 to advance knowledge of practical work with the recently discovered X-ray.
    • It's the first and the oldest society devoted to radiology in the country.
    • Establish in 1922
  • Albert Einstein

    Albert Einstein
    • Published papers on his theroy of relativity that implies convertibility of matter and energy in "Annalen der Physik"
    • E = mc2
    • Paper used Planck's concept of energy quanta to describe how light travels through space
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
    • Discovers two kinds of rays emitting from radium.
    • The first he calls alpha rays; the more penetrating rays he calls beta rays.
    • Studied the absorption of radioactivity by thin sheets of metal foil.
  • Mónico Sánchez Moreno

    Mónico Sánchez Moreno
    • Spanish engineer, born in 1880 in Piedrabuena near Ciudad Real in the Castile-La Mancha region.
    • It weighed scarcely 10 kg, as opposed to the 400 kg of the normal devices
    • The Collins Wireless Telephone Company hired Sánchez as chief engineer, in order to sell his portable x-ray machine, under the name The Collins Sánchez Portable Device. He was offered $500,000 for his invention.
  • Sister M. Beatrice Merrigan

    Sister M. Beatrice Merrigan
-Took her Radiography Exam on Nov. 17. The test included 20 essay questions and a prescribed set of radiographs.
    - She was notified of her certification the day after Christmas, when she earned the distinction of becoming the country’s first Registered Technologist.
    - The Registry was incorporated in 1936 as the American Registry of X-Ray Technicians.
  • Obninsk Nuclear Plant

    Obninsk Nuclear Plant
    • 1st grid-connected nuclear power plants in the world.
    • Decommissioned on April 29, 2002 (50 years in operation with no accident/spills)
    • Located more than 100 km southwest of Moscow, Obninsk.
    • Although production of electricity for the grid ceased in 1954: It function as a research and isotope production plant only.
  • The Einstein Observatory (HEAO-2)

    The Einstein Observatory (HEAO-2)
    • High Energy Astrophysical Observatories.
    • First fully imaging X-ray telescope put into space.
    • Lifetime : 12 November 1978 - April 1981
    • Energy Range : 0.2 - 20 keV
  • Fujifilm Medical Systems

    Fujifilm Medical Systems
    • Phosphor stimulated radiography systems first brought into clinical use.
    • After X-ray exposure the plate (sheet) is placed in a special scanner where the latent image is retrieved point by point and digitized, using laser light scanning.
    • The digitized images are stored and displayed on the computer screen.
