Parliament Passes Quartering Act
This act required colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies. -
Colonist Fear
The colonist preferred to rely on militias rather than the armies, because they had a traditional fear of them. -
Cost of quartering
The cost to provide for the army was not a small amount for the colonist. Before they 1760s colonist were afraid of the french, however after that they were no longer scared, so they found it unnecessary to have the troops there. -
Colonist Boycott
They boycotted British goods until the Quartering Act was changed. -
Violent Colonist Reaction
The colonist rebelled against the british troops -

New York Restraining Act
Prohibited the governor of New York from signing any legislation until the assembly complied with quartering act. -
Boston Massacre of 1770
Redcoats were forced to live in tents on Boston Common. Led to fights between patriots and redcoats and eventually to the Boston massacre. -
End of Quartering Act
The act was repealed because Parliament realized that the cost of enforcing the act outweighed the benefits.
