Church of England Sensors Puritans
King Charles I dismissed the puritans and sensored their writings. This upset Puritans because they were being persecuted. This eventually led to their desires of traveling to the New World. -
John Winthrope starts Massachussets
The first seven ships of the Massachusetts Bay Company that sailed from England were Puritan families, including John Winthrope. Being persecuted by the Church of England Puritans left for the new world and founded Massachussets. The Puritans left England, not because they were separtist, but because they wanted to purify the Church of England. -

The General Court of Massachusetts commissioned for an institution of higher education to be built, originally it was built for the education of puritan ministers, but later evolved into general education. -
John Winthrop Loses Power
Each Massachusetts town sends two delegates to the General Court in Boston for a meeting. The delegates demand to see the royal charter that Winthrop has kept hidden away; when he reluctantly produces it, they learn that the General Court has the power to pass laws and levy taxes. They choose a new governor to replace Winthrop, who will not occupy the office for another three years. -
The First Printing Press

The first printing press in North America is started in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This allowed for easier printing of books and other texts. This contribution from the Puritan colony revolutionized printing in the New World. -
Half- Way Covenant
The Half- Way Covenant was a form or partial church memebership created by New England. It gave membership for the children and grandchildren of church members. They did this because many people were starting to drift away from the church and this allow more people to get involved. -
King Philip's War
A raid by the Wampanoag tribe against Puritans to stop them from moving westward. When the war ended, 52 Puritan towns had been attacked. -
Salem Witch Trials
This began with a group of young girls claiming that they had been bewitched by an older women. This caused a "witch hunt", leading to the legal lynching of 20 people and 2 dogs. -

First Great Awakening
During the first great awakening the puritans lost the majority of its followers. The new revived preaching called for a relationship with god and more hope for eternal life. This new look on Christianity pulled people away from the old rituals and ceremonies.
