Puerto Rico was transferred from Spanish to United States hands. Is established that the teachers must learn English. -
Department of Public Instruction
The creation of the Department of Public Instruction, and the educational policy was that the conservation of the Spanish language and the adquisition of the English. In high school all the courses where taught in English. -
Official Language
They increase the use of the English language with the idea of making it the official language in the schools of Puerto Rico. -

Franklin D Roosevelt
The president of the United States at 1936 complained that in 38 years of the States Dominating Puerto Rico, the island didn't know English and he wished that all of the education was offered in English. Jose M. Gallardo tried to implant a bilingual education but without sucess. -
Spanish comes back
Until sixth grade Spanish was the prevailing language and the English was just as an assignment. -
Luis Muñoz Marín
The first governor elected by the Puerto Ricans, established Spanish as the language of instruction in all grades. English was to be taught for one period a day as a second language. -
