Christopher Columbus claims land for Spain on his second voyage. He named the land San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist). Columbus didn't spend much time on this island because he wanted to explore richer places. -

San Juan Boutista was renamed to Puerto Rico
Juan Ponce de Leon named an excellent harbor Puerto Rico, which means Rich Port. This town was renamed to San Juan and Puerto Rico became the name of the island then. -
The Battle of San Juan
The British invade San Juan with 6,000-13,000 men. There were many small battles that took place during the battle.The British retreated San Juan after both sides suffered heavy losses. The battle lasted almost two weeks. -

During the Spanish-American War the US invaded Puerto Rico. The US entered Puerto Rico through the port of Guanica. After the US invaded Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico was granted to the US with the Treaty of Paris after the war. -

A month before the US got involved in World War I President Woodrow Wilson signed the act, Jones-Shafroth Act, that granted citizenship to the people of Puerto Rico. The act made Puerto Rico US territory and it separated their government into executive, legislative, and judicial branches. -

The Organic Act gave Puerto Rico a legislature. Puerto Rico has 19 senators and 39 representatives. These were elected by the Puerto Rican people just like the US. Puerto Rico could then be in the Congress. -

Hiram Bithorn was the first person to be born in Puerto Rico and to play in the major leagues. He was signed as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. After he was signed this was then the introduction of Africa Americans to play in the Major League Baseball. This then had other people from Puerto Rico start to join. -
Puerto Rico became Commonwealth of the US
Puerto Rico started tobe called a commonwealth after the "Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico". Since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth they get specail privilages like, they can ignore federal laws, sign treaties with foreign countries, and receives federal funding with no strings attached. -
Hurricane Hugo hits Puerto Rico
Hurrican Hugo causes tons of damage when it hit Puerto Rico and other islands in the Carribean. When the hurricane hit Puerto Rico it was a category 3 hurricane. The hurricane got up to a category 5 before it hit Puerto Rico. -
Puerto Ricans reject an Amendment
The people of Puerto Rico voted on an amendment and rejected it. If the ammendment wasn't rejected it would have reviewed their commonwealth status and Puerto Rico could be considered a state instead of a commonwealth.
